Born in Mansoura, Egypt, Tarek got involved in bodybuilding at the age of 15. His first international appearance was at the 1994 IFBB Junior World Championship in Izmir/Turkey, where he came in 5th in the category -80 kg. In 1999, he won the IFBB International African Championship title in heavyweight. He first appeared in Koblenz, Germany at the International German Championship 2000. In a very strong heavyweight field, Tarek came in 5th with an impressive 97 kg. In 2002, he placed 11th of 36 starters at the Kairo IFBB World Championship, at 113 kg.
